After 40 overs John Covelli’s “highly credentialed and well selected” Secretary’s XII secured the much coveted victory, by 30 runs.
“They were a bit more energetic in the field than my blokes,” CYMS president Peter Snowden laughed.
“They had a few more younger players, it was just a wonderful night.”
Batting first, the Secretary’s XII got off to a horrible start as Peter West (1-15) snared the wicket of Kevin Duffy (1) early.
After losing Michael Koch (14) and John Brown (9) reasonably quickly, Gavin McDonald (33 retired) and Michael Delaney (33 retired) steadied the ship.
Kira Churchland (15), Mark Giumelli (18) and Charles Harvey (19) also made valuable contributions in the lower order, catapulting their side to 8-191.
In reply, Matt Baker (32 retired), Paul Madden (30 retired) and Peter Egan (18) were the best of the President’s XII as it fell 30 runs short at 6-161.
“We had so many people come from all over the place,” Snowden said.
“The committee did such a wonderful job, and we’re so grateful to everyone who travelled and to Bruce Cousins, who got Wade Park ready for us. It was a fantastic way to be able to catch up with everyone.
“It was the perfect way to kick off the next few months. Hopefully we get some success on the field, and everyone returns later in the year for more celebrations.”
CYMS continues its 70th anniversary celebrations after the season, with a combined reunion and presentation night on Friday, May 1.
